Artrageus 1 is a gallery exhibiting art that makes sense (of the madness), art that makes fun (of the madness) and art that tells a story (of the madness).
We the owners of Artrageus 1, Gayle Weitz and Nick Biddle, are lifelong educators who recognize the great hurdles facing humanity in the pursuit of peace, justice and sustainability. The gallery is a medium for stepping back and enjoying the creativity of people in the face of those hurdles. Gayle is an artist and her work is the centerpiece of the gallery. Please see more about her work immediately below. Artrageus 1 exhibits whimsical art that pleases the eye and political art that tickles the mind. We sell a range of literature relating to the causes and consequences of current conditions , and Tiny Footprint Coffee, the first carbon-mitigating coffee in the world.
Art is a channel for outrage. Arab Spring turns into Syrian sarin gas summer. Ice sheets melt while corporate-funded deniers get most of the press. Racism grows, suicide bombers die, and bond traders swap debts.
Non-violent and honest, artists do what politicians, businessmen and authority figures of all stripes don't: they tell the truth. Since the truth hurts, art functions as a purveyor of sanity, space in which light and dark secrets are revealed in humor, perspective and safety.
A critical dysfunction exists in the world between knowing what's wrong and not being able to fix it. Politicians represent those who pay for them, not those who vote for them. Our leaders tell us that nuclear bombs, drone assassinations and NSA surveillance are too dangerous for public accountability, that is to say, too dangerous for democracy. J.P. Morgan-Chase, AIG and General Motors are too big to fail. How can citizens make the world better if it is a crime to know how much money the CIA spends? How can the economy be called capitalist when barons on Wall Street thrive on public subsidy while burghers on Main Street can't afford health insurance?
Protest and prose, movements and scandal evaporate in 24 hour news cycles. Change is at hand but it is out of control. We're left to our own devices. There is no political except the personal.
Artrageus 1 celebrates the balance people find to keep light alive. Check us out. We're friendly.
